I just got an email from a guy wanting to publish an article on yours truly and in order to do this I had to answer a few questions.

One of the questions was: Are people more interesting than product stories?

This really got me to thinking and I realised that it was only when I start to take an interest in people and not just the product or the sale that things begin to move in all sorts of strange and wonderful ways. The internet IS about people and the interactions that go on between them are what makes this communication medium really tick.

Realise that when you are doing your day to day activities online, concentrate on what you can offer to the PERSON on the other side of the screen and see what happens;-)

"Get 50 zillion subscribers to your ezine just sign up below", "Post to 600 million web sites with one click of your mouse" or "Make 10 Gazillion dollars straight to your mailbox by sending this e-mail on to ten of your friends". OK I'm overexaggerating a little but you get my point.
How many times have we all read this type of hogwash and thought OH YES this is the one I've been looking for and subsequently went on to sign up free, or worse still, forked out $50 for the product and then felt cheated a few days later.

Yes me too...

Is this the fault of the person trying to sell their product? Of course not. Is the person who wrote the ad copy responsible? Of course not. It is YOUR responsibility and MINES for falling for this hype time and time again and believe me I have fallen on quite a few occasions:-)

We WANT to believe what the webmaster is telling us at their web site or in their e-mails. The lazy part in us that wants overnight success, wants to believe that we won't have to put in any work and that success will just fall at our feet.

It is time to wake up. Success DOES NOT come overnight and you are more than likely going to take a few falls and a few hard knocks before you make it online, offline or in life for that matter.

What the web site should really say is:

"If you sign up for my program below, put in around 4-5 years of hard work, make lots of contacts with people who have been there and done it before you, keep plodding on through the rough times and most importantly never give up then you should be able to find a certain level of success in online marketing and make a significant income to sustain yourself and your family and retire financially free.

Chances are though, you won't make it because you will become disillusioned when this doesn't work for you overnight as I have outlined, you will succumb to the same crap at a few other sites and you will give up before you even get off the ground."

This may sound harsh but it is the sad reality of the online marketing world today and if we keep on believing the hype then people, being people, will keeping on telling us what we WANT to hear.

But there is hope...

It resides in that part of yourself that is determined to succeed no matter what the odds and in spite of what obstacles are placed in our way.

In my humble opinion the vast majority of marketing products and online services out there are well worth the money. Look on the cash you put forward as an investment. Even if you don't get 100% what you expect from the sale there is ALWAYS potential rewards even in what appears to be a negative situation. I haven't made a purchase yet that didn't show at least some potential. YOUR approach to what you have before you makes all the difference.

When faced with a hard sell try to see through the hype to what the product/program ACTUALLY offers. Ask yourself "Is this $30, $50 price tag going to propel my business forward in any way? Does it have the potential to bring me an acceptable increase in my subscription levels? Can it bring me enough sales to put me in profit? Can I get enough from this free sign up to warrant even filling in the enrolment form?

When you have bought your package, joined your affiliate or marketing program make sure you read everything thoroughly. Take what you have and make it work. Give it at least a few weeks of constant effort. If you are making headway then run with it and don't stop til you get to the bank.

Most programs/services WILL give you the tools, it is up to YOU whether you decide to take full advantage of them. You can read every E-Book, home business report or marketing article that the web has to offer but until you actually put the ideas into practice it remains just ink on paper and ink on paper doesn't sell products, YOU do through your efforts.

So get out there, make some contacts, make some mistakes, learn the business, take SOME risks and GROW as you go.

MOST IMPORTANTLY of all NEVER EVER GIVE UP until you achieve what it is you have set out to accomplish. At the end of the day it it ABSOLUTELY down to YOU!

I hope I haven't scared you off too much. My intention is to wake you up, not prolong your nightmare;-)

After last weeks Tidbit on saving time through Copy and Paste one of our readers Mary Ann kindly sent me an email outlining further short cuts when using Word or notepad.

Here it is: "After highlighting the text you wish to copy, press the ctrl key and the "C" key and that takes the text automatically to the clipboard. Open Word (or whatever you use for word processing) and click on a new sheet (the white square in the menu bar that has a turned corner); when the I-bar begins to blink on the new sheet; press Ctrl key and the "V" key, and the paste will take place before your eyes. Or you can click on the clipboard icon; a brown square with a white square (folded corner) & lines on it. Another version: When in Word use the Alt key and "e" (or any underlined letter in the menu bar) then Ctrl key plus "v" key to get to the paste function. " Mary Ann Murray

Furthermore folks this Ctrl C (To copy) Ctrl V (To paste) can actually be used to copy text from a webpage to say an online classifieds form or from your notepad file to a search engine submission form.

GUEST ARTICLE - Is your website Growing or Slowing?

There are many ways to determine your website's success. The unfortunate part in this is that most website owners are completely unaware of what numbers they should be looking at on both a weekly, monthly and yearly basis.

In a nutshell - the numbers tell the whole story.

First up, before you can begin to analysis your website's success ratios you must determine exactly what it's primary and then secondary objectives are.

EG. Is your website set up to take e-Commerce orders Online vs. Is it's goal to generate leads for sales follow up.

As a final outcome, one of these two options will most likely be your final measuring stick. That's easy to see and understand. However, there are also many other numbers you can and should look at to then help improve and increase your success ratios.

1. It begins with traffic. Next time you go into your website's statistics data area take a look at how much over all traffic you are getting. Next, look more carefully at your traffic to see whether it is "targeted" to your website with a high level of interest in what you have to offer, or whether it is just general "run of the mill - I found you by accident" traffic.

How can you determine this? Easy. First look at what search engine phrases people used to find you. If you're selling short stay accommodation packages for the north of Sydney and one of your top search phrases is "overnight accommodation north Sydney" then this is targeted. If one of the top search phrases is "family accommodation Sydney Australia" or "sandy beaches Sydney" then this is untargeted traffic.

Another key you can look at is the average time that your website visitors stay on individual pages, and also where they navigate through your website. As with most websites the highest pages views go to the main page - but where do they go after that? How long do they stay on pages? This allows you to determine if they are actually reading the content of your pages of just 'browsing'. Targeted traffic visitors always read the majority of the content of your information pages.

Once you have determined the percentage of targeted traffic to your website, you can then compare that to actual "sales". That could be either Bookings Online or Contact Forms submitted, depending on your goal and your set up.

2. Another area to look at which relates to long term success is how many of these people subscribe to either your free monthly e-Newsletter or your free email information pack. This is another very important number.

Calculate the percentage of visitors to your site vs. subscribers. If it's under 5% then you've got some serious work to do. Your goal here should be to obtain at least a 10% conversion ration to 'free contacts' where your visitors give you permission to send them future information.

If you find that your actual 'sales' conversion ration is low (under 5%) you may want to give serious thought towards boosting the profile of your free information services.

Once you've received permission to send a prospective client information by email and you then make sure they get good quality information, you can then keep them as a "free customer" for many years - which will eventually convert them to a paying customer.

3. Finally, you should set aside the time to review these numbers at a minimum each month and then make changes to your website accordingly.

A website on it's own it usually nothing more than a waste of time and money. Your site must be geared towards performance and results, not just free information. People love free stuff Online, and they will milk you for everything they can get.

My advice is that you capitalise on this 'freebie' mentality and use it to your advantage.
