FEATURE ARTICLE - Advertising Dos and DONTs-
===================================
By
Mal Keenan, Home Business Tips Newsletter
From early on in my online career I realised that the
fastest way to internet riches was to find a marketing
concept that brought me profits and plough as much as I
could into that resource, thus building my business and
capital as I went.
For those just beginning in home business marketing it
would be prudent to start off with a very small investment
(I started with around $30) and try to build from there. It
would like to report that I was very wise after the first
investment but the truth is that the illusion of easily
gotten riches lured me into a spree of buying virtually
every item of software/marketing resource that I happened
to feast my eyes upon.
Needless to say this is not the best way to go about
building a successful online career but the experience and
benefits I got from this initial burst of enthusiasm, in
how not to go about targeted advertising, far outweighed
the financial losses. I have spent money on most of what
the web has to offer in terms of marketing and can now
enlighten you on what to buy and what not to touch with a
12 ft barge pole.
FFAs or Free For All link pages were once a useful free
resource and could have provided at least a few hits per
day given the right ad. Today using the free version of
these pages is all but useless and in my humble opinion a
total waste of time. The vast majority of people submitting
to these sites today are using automated submission
software so human eyes WILL never see your ad and as far as
I know Automatons (Robots to some people) DO NOT buy
products;-)
Paid or free safelists from my experience are just not
worth the effort involved. The very fact that everyone
posting to a safelist is not interested in the subject
matter but in selling their own products gives us some idea
on the ineffectiveness of this method. Couple this with the
time spent sorting through emails mostly for deletion you
really could spend your time in more worthwhile marketing
ventures.
Moving up the ladder of effectiveness we have banner
advertising. From my experience the best banner I was able
to design brought me in a maximum of 2.8% click thru rate
and from what I hear this is a GREAT %. Most banners will
only pull a 1% CTR. If you can find a company selling
banner advertising cheap enough to bring you into the
profit zone then certainly give it a bash. Please remember
though to track all your banner ads otherwise you will not
know whether you are getting massive click throughs or none
at all.
If you are going to post to classified sites then opt for
the free version. There is some good classified submission
software out there and may be worth the investment. Again
ALWAYS TRACK YOUR ADS. For free classifieds visit:
Adland Pro
Renting an email list is a good option and can bring you
many hits to your product or affiliate site. Make sure that
the list is optin only, meaning the people have requested
to see your ad. There are many good reputable companies out
there and if you are willing to pay sometimes high fees to
rent a list, this can be a profitable venture.
Search engine submission is definitely a worthwhile project
and considering a good listing will bring you daily and
continuing free traffic I suggest you spend a bit of time
perfecting this method. I use Web Position Gold software to
automate my submissions and prepare my pages for
submission. This cuts down in hours of work and I would
certainly recommend any budding business owners to get a
copy. To learn more about Webposition Gold visit this
link:
Web Position Gold
I have also paid for a listing to Yahoo's directory. At
$299 per year this may sound very expensive to some but the
traffic I have gotten from this listing paid for the
submission within a short period of time.
Pey per click advertising is another good advertising
resource to drive TARGETED traffic to your site. First
figure out how much you can afford to pay per visitor to
your site. For instance if you make a sale every 100
visitors and your product costs $20 then if you paid 20
cents per visitor you would break even. The reality is of
course that you can get visitors for much less than 20
cents and I have many keyword phrases that will send
visitors to my site for 1 cent each. If you can find a few
good keyword phrases at a profitable price then you will do
well. Two good PPCSEs to start with and that I use are Overture.com and Findwhat.com.
Ezine advertising is by far the best form of advertising
and more importantly is reasonably priced. From my own
experience a solo or top spot ad are the most effective and
will return more visitors for the price. For a good list of
ezines visit:
Directory of Ezines
A word of WARNING before closing this article: If you want
to keep your business and your reputation intact then NEVER
EVER use bulk email advertising. It just isn't worth the
risk. The hassle that you will get from sending out
unsolicited email to 1000s of untargeted prospects will
bring your business down in the long run. There are enough
forms of advertising listed here to keep you going for a
long time. Don't waste your time on unproductive and
senseless SPAMMING.
I wish you all the best in your efforts:-)

TIDBIT OF THE WEEK
Send your home business tidbits to
readers@home-business-tips-newsletter.com
===================================
To all you veterans out there this weeks tidbit is going to
be completely useless but it still amazes me the amount of
people who not know the basics of copying and pasting from
a webpage to a notepad or wordpad file.
I myself was online for at least a month before I learnt
this basic windows utility. (I know you find that hard to
believe;-))
So here goes for all you newbies:
Step one:
Take any piece of text like:
HOME BUSINESS TIPS NEWSLETTER IS WONDERFUL
Copy by holding down the left mouse button and dragging the
cursor from left to right or vice versa. Release the left
mouse button. If you want to copy more than one line then
just move the cursor down the screen while holding the left
mouse button.
If you wish to highlight text beyond the immediate screen,
continue holding down the left mouse button and drag the
cursor onto the grey bar at the bottom of the screen.
Additional text will become highlighted. When you have
reached the last line you want to copy, release the left
mouse button.
NOTE: If you want to copy from a Web page that extends for
several screens, try this instead:
Click the left mouse button at the place where you want to
begin copying
Hold down the Shift key
Scroll down the page, using your browser's scroll bar on
the right, until you reach the end point of what you want
to copy
Position your mouse at the end point and click the left
mouse button; note that everything in between the two
points becomes highlighted
Release the Shift key and proceed to step 2 below
Step two:
Click on Edit above the tool bar at the upper left side of
the screen or alternatively right click on the highlighted
text. Click on Copy.
Click on the Start button, and choose Programs -->
Accessories --> WordPad/Notepad
Click on Edit at the upper left side of the screen or right
click anywhere in the wordpad/notepad file. Click on Paste.
The text copied from the Web page or HOME BUSINESS TIPS
NEWSLETTER IS WONDERFUL will be pasted into WordPad.
This should save you a lot of time typing:-)

REVIEW: Products or Services
===================================
Linksmanager
Linksmanager is one of those services that, if you are
serious about gaining a significant presence online, you
just CANNOT do without.
I signed up for Linksmanager around 6 months ago and was so
impressed with the layout and the automation of their
service that I opened up another three accounts with them
to run link exchanges for my other sites:
http://www.freeadvertz.com/businesslinks/add_link.html
http://www.workfromhomebiz.biz/businesslinks/add_link.html
http://www.workathomebiz.info/businesslinks/add_link.html
http://www.home-business-tips-newsletter.com/businesslinks/add_link.html
If you are going to get good rankings in the search engines
then it is important thast you have good quality links
pointing back to your sites. Linksmanager totally automates
this process for me. It sends automated emails to all new
submissions, checks their site for reciprocal links, and
sends email reminders if they don't reciprocate. I just go
into my account everyday and approve or decline links
swaps.

GUEST ARTICLE - HOW TO KICK START SALES BY DEMONSTRATING ROI
===================================
By
--- Jim McCraigh
These days it seems like itıs tougher than ever to get
prospects to commit to anything. Many businesses have
adopted "donıt-buy-anything" policies. Consumer confidence
is at a ten year low. Buyers seem to be waiting for the war
in Iraq to be over or the economic recovery to begin. Yet,
there are marketers that are doing very well right now
despite all of this ugly news. Why? Because their customers
believe that they will be better off if they buy NOW rather
than later. Let me explain---
ROI is Return on Investment. In business-to-business
selling it is critical to talk about, promise, and clearly
demonstrate ROI. In consumer marketing, the same is true to
the extent that you must illustrate how and why your
offering will leave them better off for having purchased
than not.
In selling to businesses ROI must be worked into your sales
pitch. Hereıs an example from a project that I did for a
utility company a few years ago:
"In the past 7 months, over 204 facilities managers
reported measurable savings in electricity costs as a
direct result of retrofitting their HVAC units with one of
our units. These same mangers reported first year savings
of between $1820 and $2780. With this many customers
getting this kind of proven results time after time, these
units are sure to save you money. At a cost of just $1799,
your return on investment can easily be 100% or more the
first year alone!"
ROI doesnıt always have to be related to money. In the
sports world, consider the example of maple wood baseball
bats. Last year I helped a company that produces maple bats
for high school, college, and minor league players as well
as major league athletes. Whatıs the return on investment
for the right baseball bat? It can be huge:
"Most balls hit with a maple bat will carry an average 10
feet or more than balls hit with a bat made from ash. This
extra 10 feet can be the difference between a deep fly ball
and a home run, or simply the number of extra base hits you
get in a season. Just 2 more hits per 50 times at bat will
raise a .260 batting average to a respectable .300! That
may be difference you need when it comes to getting
recruited by a major college or professional baseball team.
Wouldnıt that be well worth the extra $15 investment
compared to shorter range ash bats?"
Make Your Case Even More Compelling Hereıs two ways you can
give your ROI illustrations even more punch. The first
technique is to back up your ROI assertion with a
testimonial or two to offer more proof of claim. Use
testimonials that contain specific numbers that
convincingly prove your point. Statements with simple
"excellent unit" or "great system" comments are too vague
to add any real impact. You may have to go so far as to
coach your customers on this. Or even wordsmith it for them
prior to their signature.
Second, consider presenting the best ROI scenario possible
and then backing off of it to add more believability---
Like this:
"Even if your savings are half as much, youıll still pocket
$500 after paying for the fan blades!"
Maybe your product or service doesnıt produce results this
dramatic. It doesnıt matter. Go ahead and do the ROI
calculation and build the results into your sales promotion
materials, replacing any vague or unsupported claims there
now. If you donıt have the data you need, go talk to your
customers!
