Greetings friends,
As always a warm welcome to those of you who have joined us since our last issue of HBT Newsletter.

What I have begun to realise lately is that I just don't have the time to do everything I want to online and so I am left with the dilemma of outsourcing some of my work. What I actually need done is for someone to create web pages for me using certain software which they will need training for.

My dilemma is that I don't know who I could trust to do a good job

PLUS I am going to have to come up with some sort of training system to train them too.

I have outsourced work before using Elance.com with mixed results.

All in all though Elance has been a great service and I know I am going to be using it again soon.

Any of you using it? Anything to share, I'd love to hear from you.

FEATURE Article - Virus Nightmare..Lessons Learned

I got a virus the other day, Thursday I believe and since then I have been making FRANTIC efforts to save all my info.

The most important thing for me to save are my Outlook Express emails and my Roboform passwords. That way I can at least access all the places I need, to download and re-install all the software I use.

Thankfully I was able to still access my Laptop and very, very slowly(the system was painfully slow because of the damge done by the virus) start a process of trying to save my system without having to reformat the whole disk. I say thankfully because after a virus attack not everyone is able to even access the system.

I tried anti-virus software, I attempted to fix things using the various "malicious advertising" expulsion applications(Ad-aware, Spybot etc.). All to no avail. After almost three days I resigned myself to the fact that it would have to be a re-format which means restoring my Laptop to factory settings. What a nightmare!

First of all I made a backup of my Outlook express email software, emails, account settings etc. For this I downloaded a great little free trial software application called Outlook Express Back Up Wizard, a free trial can be downloaded here:

The I did a search for some backup software to back up the files that I could and also to use for future occasions. After trying a few that either wouldn't work on my system, or didn't back up to the medium that I wanted(CD Rom Discs) I found a great tool that just did the trick and in fact I plan to buy as soon as the free trial is up. The software is called "NTI Backup Now 4 Deluxe Suite" and it is so straightforward that even a tech dummy like me found it simple.

I added my Roboform(www.roboform.com) passwords, my Internet Explorer favourites, my Outlook Express backup, my Microsoft Money backup files(For accounting purposes), as many software installation files as I had and most of the files and folders that I have used recently.

Of course what I also ralised is that I have not kept the Install files of loads of the software that I have on my Laptop. Bad mistake! This means that I will have to go search for these again to download to my reformatted system.

What I will do in future is save every Install file in it's own folder with passwords, serial numbers and any other useful info in a notepad file alongside them.

The hard lesson I have learned is to make sure in future I do frequent backups of my system. I have been online since 1998 and never had any major problems. This is the first and I foolishly underestimated the damage a virus could do.

My next step is to get an external drive to use as a backup and as I mentioned to use it frequently.

I hope this has given you some food for thought. As I sign off here I am going to insert my Toshiba Product Recovery CD-Rom.

If I had taken the necessary precautions I wouldn't have just lost three days of my time. Three days I could have been putting to better use.

Ah well, there is positive in every bad situation. Or at least that's what I keep telling myself:-).

Self-confidence is necessary for success

Self-confidence is necessary not only to achieve success with our goals, but also to live a happier and contented life. When we have self-confidence, we can overcome many of life's obstacles easier. Are there tools available for us to develop our self-confidence?

As Arthur Ashe says preparation is an important key to self-confidence. And preparation can be achieved by using the goal setting tool of questions. Asking questions, that is, doing research, can enable you to become proficient is whatever subject or area you want you to.

Identify the obstacle

Before you can work on gaining more self-confidence, you need to clearly identify the area that is an obstacle for you not having self-confidence. When you have identified the obstacle, you can use a variety of goal setting tools to solve it. And yes, you should undertake your development of self-confidence as a goal. This way you can make positive progress, and have eventual success.

Can I share the following true story with you...

Having had over eight years experience in technical writing, but lacking the industry software skills, I turned down positions as result of a lack of self-confidence. It did not take any rocket science for me to realize that I needed to become skilled in the software that was being used in the industry.

The industry standards at the time were Microsoft Word and CorelDRAW. If you are familiar with these software packages, you know there are a myriad of features, and in technical writing, many, many of these are used.

There was only one way I could master this software...

Use a step-by-step approach

Adopting a step-by-step approach is a practical tool for reaching your goal of gaining self-confidence.

Before starting, you should determine as accurately as possible as to what the steps are. This forms part of your preparation, or research, in many cases. Become familiar with the subject matter.

For me, the starting point was finding out what the most used features were in producing technical documentation. Armed with this knowledge, I could begin my step-by-step approach.

Using this approach I began with one or two features only, and I would practice these until I could do it almost blindfolded. And from there I would move onto the next feature or two.

Self-confidence will come

Using the one goal setting tool of a step-by-step approach, you will become more knowledgeable, and as a result your level of self-confidence will rise.

In using this tool, my self-confidence rose to the level where I lectured freelance at a leading computer training school.

For the effective attainment of your goals, no single goal setting tool should be used in isolation.

Make it your goal to...

Identify the obstacle or obstacles that are preventing you from having self-confidence. Do your research, and begin as soon as possible to use the goal setting tool of a step-by-step approach. You will gain self-confidence.
