A Note from Mal Keenan

Greetings friends,
As always a warm welcome to all our new subscribers since
our last issue.
I don't know about you but I was always under
the impression that a first page ranking for a popular
search term would bring me loads and loads of hits. From my
experience not so!!
Take for instance my website: http://www.workfromhomebiz.biz/
I used Web Position Gold (Download a free trial version
here:http://www.workathomebiz.info/webposition.html ) to
optimize my sites and then submitted it, again using WPG,
to all the major search engines.
After a short while I noticed I was beginning to climb the
rankings and began to get quite excited. So recently I
checked my ranking and am in the first page, number ten to
be exact, at Yahoo for the search term "business
opportunity".
Thousands of daily hits? No. Hundreds? No. Ten on a good
day would be nearer the mark.
Ok folks I'm not complaining. These are FREE hits and it
took very little effort to get there but it just shows how
expectations can be so far from reality.
I let you know how many daily hits I get when I reach
number one for ALL the major business search key phrases;-)

FEATURE ARTICLE - An Online Marketer Meets A Normal Person

Often I get the feeling that normal people (you know, the
ones that don't spend hours on end lurking behind their
computer screens) think those of us who earn our living
online are just, well...different.
For example, here's a composite of the type of conversation
I have at an ordinary, everyday gathering of normal people:
Normal person: "So what do you do for a living?"
Me: "I own and operate an online business."
Normal person: "Really! So what exactly is it that you do
online?"
At this point the normal person is showing genuine interest
in learning more about my business. But when I attempt to
answer their question about "exactly" what I do, that's
when the fun REALLY begins.
Me: "I operate a website that helps people earn an income
from home."
I know this doesn't really answer their question, because
their REAL interest comes in their next inquiry:
Normal person: "So how EXACTLY do you make money doing
that?"
Now, for those of you who work online, you KNOW how
difficult it can be to explain that to someone who has
absolutely no knowledge of how internet marketing works.
And if they've had a drink or two, well...forget it.
But I try.
Me: "I publish a newsletter and review various products
and resources that help people earn an income from home. In
my newsletter I warn people of the enormous number of "work
at home" scams that exist and keep them informed about the
best products, opportunities, and resources available to
help them create a home-based income. I feature a wide
variety of items and because I own them and use them
myself, I can recommend them as high quality products. I
then make a commission on the items I sell because I am an
affiliate of the companies that own them."
If you market online yourself, you know what comes next.
The polite smile.
Or the blank stare.
But more often than not, they feel compelled to respond,
even though by this time you've lost them. Completely.
Normal person: "So what did you do before you started this
online business?"
Translation:
Have you ever had a "real" job? If so, let's talk about
that because it's something I can understand. If not, I'm
going to have to excuse myself and go get another drink
because I'm clueless here and I sure don't want to admit
it.
Me: "Oh, do you mean did I have a regular nine-to-five
job? One of those ones that meant fighting horrendous
traffic five days a week, putting up with difficult bosses
and grumpy co-workers, and not being able to take time off
when I wanted to or needed to? Yea, I had one of those
once."
Suddenly, the normal person begins to understand that you
aren't so different after all. A knowing expression creeps
across his or her face. Then they ask their final
question:
"Do you happen to have a business card?"

your subscribers in order to get them to open your emails.
Half the battle is getting potential buyers to take a look
inside. It is then up to your ad copy to actually sell the
product.
An example of sparking curiousity can be found in the
following subject line and email ad copy.
Subject:
Why 9 out of 10 women will read this!!
Ad Copy:
9 out of 10 women will read this out of curiosity,
9 out of 10 men will read this, just to find out what 9 out
of 10 WOMEN will do!!

"Hang in there", "Stay the course", "Persevere", "Keep on
keeping on", "Slow and steady wins the race".
These clichés abound because they're true. Even Woody Allen
said, "Ninety percent of success is showing up".
There's a lot to be said for longevity. The stability that
comes from having been around awhile adds credibility and
security. You have the advantage of your experience as well
as the notoriety that comes from being known in the
marketplace.
My company (Success Networks) has been in business for over
seven years. In Internet years, that's a VERY LONG time. Is
it a market advantage? You bet. Is it enough? No, it's not.
But customers do have more confidence dealing with a
company that's been in business awhile than they do with a
startup. Most people figure a company that's endured must
be doing at least SOME things right. If you're in
business for the long haul, you make better decisions. When
you think long-term, you're not as tempted to take
short-cuts because they rarely pay off in the end.
The longer you're in business, the more relationships you
can develop and more opportunities will come your way.
A good objective for a world-class business is to create a
company that can endure at least 100 years. Stability is
one of the ten pillars of a world-class organization and is
actually one of the many byproducts of the strategies and
principles of the other nine. (Note: to get your copy of

You can't do anything about how long you've BEEN in
business, but you CAN do something about how long you're
going to BE in business.
Running an organization has never been easy. And with the
complexities of a rapidly changing marketplace, new
technologies, world markets and changing cultures the
challenges have never been greater.
It is incumbent upon us as business managers and leaders to
keep things going--to build stability. Companies making
rapid progress may get the headlines, but they are the
exception rather than the norm. Far more companies succeed
by daily taking care of the fundamentals, serving customers
well and answering the phone on a regular basis.
It's not particularly dramatic, but it works. What may
look like spectacular success is usually the result of
less-than-spectacular hard work and preparation. Successful
companies have been consistent at enough things to earn
profits, increase sales and keep the doors open.
It's critical we take care of ourselves and take care of
our organization so we can be around long enough to benefit
from all our hard work. If we don't, we do a disservice to
ourselves, our customers, our employees and our
stakeholders.
Questions: How am I building the stability and staying
power of my company? In what ways can we increase our
security and enhance our chance for longevity?
